One of the first ponies we bought for the riding school was a Dartmoor mare. Lady Coquette of Winslade was five years old with a colt foal at foot. I went with my father to the Dartmoor Pony Sales at Exeter and bid for her, purchasing her for 98 guineas, warranted quiet to ride. We had to wait until the foal was weaned before taking delivery and she arrived late at night in a very large, unlit horsebox. I remember groping for her in the dark and encountering a warm, velvety nose! She was the most fabulous school pony and taught probably hundreds of children to ride. She was placed many times in Dartmoor showing in hand and ridden classes and was with us until the grand age of 30!
Having lost Buttons and Ebony in quick succession we did not have a small pony for children’s lead rein and lessons and my sister, Diana, decided that what we really needed was another Dartmoor. She went on a quest and found Chance in Kent.
Louise (one of our freelance instructors) went to try her with her daughter Isla and tried her in a torrential downpour with thunder and lightening! Chance has been out hacking with her and popping over jumps and has been well behaved.
As you see from the photo, she has settled well and is proving to be a real assest to the Wildwoods Equine Team!
